Trump and Harris are vying for votes in pivotal North Carolina,With six days remaining
Kamala Harris and Donald Trump are making final campaign pushes in North Carolina on Wednesday, a pivotal Southern swing state with 16 electoral votes. Despite having a Democratic governor, North Carolina has backed Republican presidential candidates in the last three elections.
North Carolina’s Electoral College votes are tied with Georgia as the second-largest prize among the seven key swing states likely to determine whether Harris or Trump secures the presidency. A recent Reuters/Ipsos poll shows Harris leading Trump nationally by a narrow margin, 44% to 43%, while state-level polling reflects a close race, with Trump slightly ahead by one point. The impact of last month’s hurricane damage in the state adds an element of unpredictability to the outcome.
Harris will speak in Raleigh, North Carolina’s fast-growing capital with a population of 480,000, while Trump will hold a rally in Rocky Mount, a city of around 50,000. Trump narrowly won North Carolina by under 1.5 points in 2020, with the last Democratic win in the state going to Barack Obama in 2008.
At a rally in Washington, D.C., Tuesday night, Harris highlighted the stakes of the election and warned of the potential risks of returning Trump to office, referencing the January 6 Capitol riot. Meanwhile, Trump focused on trade, criticizing the European Union for its car exports to the U.S., and accused President Joe Biden of demonizing his supporters. Biden later clarified that his comments targeted language used by some Trump supporters, not the supporters themselves.
The election stakes are high, with Harris and Trump taking opposing stands on Ukraine support, NATO, abortion rights, taxes, and trade policies. With parts of North Carolina still recovering from hurricane damage, the state’s results may take over a week to finalize, as absentee and overseas ballots can be counted for up to 10 days post-Election Day.
Both candidates are expected to continue their campaigns in key battlegrounds, with Harris heading to Pennsylvania and Wisconsin later on Wednesday, and Trump also scheduled to campaign in Wisconsin, joined by NFL legend Brett Favre.
